ACTIVITIES SPOTLIGHT
Our after-school clubs and activities allow scholars to tap into their interests and develop leadership skills. Take center stage in our annual school play or learn about Korean pop culture with our K-Pop Club. Practice organization, leadership, and math in a Dungeons and Dragons club. Take a peek at some all-time student favorites:
SPEEDCUBING
Do you ever get the urge to do something fast? What about really, REALLY fast? Our LJA speedsters are drawn to our Speedcubing activity, which allows them to practice fast thinking (and fine motor skills) as they solve puzzle cubes as quickly as possible. Don’t blink or you might miss this one!
Urban Gardening
Have you seen the price of apples these days?! Students develop their green thumbs in urban gardening by understanding how to cultivate plants and foods through container gardening and in LJA’s own courtyard garden. Students learn about food deserts, horticultural sustainability, and agriculture and can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
FERMI MATH
How many balloons would it take to cover the entire ceiling of LJA? In Fermi Math, students learn to develop a question and a mathematical process to produce a reasonable estimate. These back-of-the-envelope math calculations can help even the least confident student enjoy exploring mathematical concepts.
Have an idea for a new student club? Let a teacher know. We work to support student interests.
ATHLETICS PROGRAMS
We currently offer soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams. These teams are for players who have many years experience, or players who are wanting to try a new sport for the first time! We emphasize fun, equal playing time, and a learning environment to develop skills and improve the ability to work with a team. We are always looking to find ways to add more sports into our program! We also partner with Avalon for ultimate frisbee and with the St. Paul Parks and Recreation League for lacrosse.
LJA also offers fall and spring Girls on the Run and Heart & Sole teams! Girls on the Run is a national organization that provides running coaches and lessons on girl empowerment and social skills. This is a non-competitive running program that culminates in a 5k event with all the other Girls on the Run teams from the Twin Cities area! For more information, go to gotrtwincities.org.
