Breaking Down Silos: STEM Meets the Arts

Who says STEM and the arts can't share the spotlight? In our classrooms, we believe in breaking down barriers and embracing the creative fusion of disciplines. Picture this: students crafting digital compositions using mathematical algorithms; planning, creating, testing, refining and presenting chain reaction machines; or making their imagination come alive through clay while learning about the chemical reactions that happen during firing!

Students are transforming complex scientific theories into immersive storytelling experiences…and the best part? This learning is FUN.

Through our multidisciplinary approach, students aren't just learning STEM subjects in isolation; they're infusing their scientific exploration with artistic expression. This integration not only enhances their understanding of STEM concepts but also nurtures their creativity and empowers them to communicate their ideas in innovative ways. With the fusion of STEM and the arts, we're fostering a generation of critical thinkers who are not only scientifically literate but also creatively adept and comfortable expressing themselves through different mediums. 

The Language of Innovation: STEM in Communication

Communication is where scientific principles come to life, turning complicated ideas into clear stories accompanied by engaging visuals.

Mixing STEM with language arts clarifies our scientific messages and changes how we connect with information in every area. STEM-infused communication breaks barriers and holds people's attention like never before.

Here at LJA, starting in 5th grade, students dive deep into learning by exploring various subjects. For instance, in our book club, students don't just read—they experience. This year, our choice was "Inside Out and Back Again," a tale of a 10-year-old girl immigrating to the United States from Vietnam. As we read, we also tasted the foods mentioned in the book, delving into its rich historical, social, and cultural layers.

Through this activity, students can analyze and evaluate the significance of the foods within the context of the story. They consider the nutritional value of the foods, the socio-economic factors influencing food access, and the environmental impact of food production—all of which are aspects of STEM subjects.

Unlocking Unique STEM Opportunities

STEM is not just test tubes or computer programming; it’s a way to explore the world. STEM helps students to:

Recently, LJA teamed up with the Minnesota Medical Association and the University of Minnesota Medical School Office of Admissions to launch an extraordinary medical careers program. Our scholars had the chance to immerse themselves in a "mini medical school" experience, where they discovered firsthand how STEM intersects with the world of medicine.

From exploring the vital role of physicians to crafting their own medical oaths, students gained invaluable insights into the dynamic field of healthcare. Through hands-on experiences and engaging activities, they witnessed the transformative power of STEM in shaping everything from surgical procedures to patient care.

In our classes, we mix STEM with other subjects to spark creativity and innovation. Whether it's blending science with art, technology with communication, or engineering with cooking and healthcare, the possibilities are endless. At LJA, we're making sure everyone has a chance to Think, Dream, and Do. In a field where historically underrepresented voices are often overlooked, LJA is pioneering change by fostering an inclusive environment that embraces diversity and empowers every student to thrive in STEM.
